Pirates and cowboys were two types of characters featured at two local churches during their Vacation Bible Schools this week.

Fifth Avenue Baptist Church’s VBS featured a western theme this year, according to new interim pastor John Geaney.

Geaney said this year’s theme — provided by an organization called LifeWay — focused on “Saddle Ridge Ranch” and provided lessons and videos for the week-long studies.

“Every morning they watch clips of a ranch that sets up the Bible lesson each day,” Geaney said.

The 40 children that ranged in age from 2 years old to fifth-graders also had the opportunity during their session to meet a real-life cowboy.

Josh Littlejohn, who is manager of the Gold City Corral and Carriage Co. in Dahlonega, said he’s been riding horses since he was 6 months old. He brought two horses for children to ride during the morning and visited other churches around the area as well.
